Highway / Travel Signs

Every state’s Department of Transportation administers the posting of travel services signage at freeway and highway off-ramps/exits – hotels, restaurants, tourist sites, etc. If your business is located off a major highway, road signs can be an extremely cost effective advertising tool. In a random sample of highway travelers, Oregon’s TIC found that nearly 100% of travelers recall the large blue off-ramp signs pointing to travel services.

If you are interested in advertising your business at interstate, state or county highway exits, the place to start is with your State’s Travel Information Council (within the department of transportation). They will advise you if space is available at the off ramp near your business. Most of them charge a “rental” fee for that space for a specific period of time. To get started, submit the application request with your deposit.

Most states will additionally provide you with a list of companies qualified to produce these signs. Each fabrication company must be pre-approved as the TIC has very specific standards on size and materials. S2 Imaging is certified in Oregon and we are very familiar with ODOT’s standards and processes. We will provide a graphic sign layout for your approval, before forwarding the outdoor sign proposal to the Travel Information Center for their approval. With approval from both parties, we can then order the sign blanks and begin production on your custom highway and travel signage. As mentioned, each state is very specific about what materials must be used – travel signs must be .080 gauge aluminum with radius corners and reflective vinyl graphics. Sign size is determined by whether it is an interstate or off-interstate sign. Installation of the highway travel signs is provided by a subcontractor of the state and is covered in the rental fee.
